This book is concerned with the ways in which amplifiers can be used to solve problems, starting with the classical techniques of analogue computation, and leading to a discussion of the asychronous control of computer systems, which allow for optimisation and other problems to be solved with iterative methods. Basic programming and scaling are dealt with; the operation of amplifiers in different computing modes is described; problems associated with the convergence of iterative programmes are discussed. Much of the book is concerned with sources and effects of errors in analogue systems, particularly those caused by imperfections in the relatively inexpensive \'off-the-shelf\' components normally used in instrumentation systems. A discussion of methods of building circuits with prescribed characteristics follows, and the book concludes with the application to a particular computing problem of the methods developed in earlier chapters.
