Poland - Israel 1944-1968: In the Shadow of the Past and of the Soviet Union by Bozena Szaynok
The topic of Polish-Israeli relations was underrepresented in Polish historiography during the communist regime. Political changes in Poland after 1989 have allowed Polish historians to undertake unrestricted censorship-free research. No less importantly, they now have the use of archives which were once inaccessible for political reasons, as well as access to foreign sources. As a result, there has been an outpouring of publications related to the history of Jews in Poland and Polish-Jewish relations. The aim of this research project was an examination and description of the changing position of the Israeli state in Polish foreign policy from the moment of Israel\'s inception in 1948 until the breaking off of diplomatic relations in June 1967. This research was also intended to clarify Poland\'s position on the situation in Palestine immediately after the war of 1944-1946, and during the United Nations discussion on the future of the region (1947). The last chapter of the book is devoted to the role Israel played in the \"March propaganda\" of 1968. Hence the time-frame of this study: 1944-1968. This volume is largely based on documents held by Polish archives. In addition to archival, press, and library sources, the author made use of accounts written by Polish and Israeli politicians, Polish Jews, and ethnic Poles. In very good condition.
