James, Esq., student of Christ Church, Oxford, to the Honourable Heneage Legge for the masterly and spirited etchings which accompany the volume.Title vignette, 18 engraved plates including 12 aquatints, text plan of Moscow . Half calf; gilt. First edition. An illustrated travel account of northern Europe in the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars. The author, an Oxford student, visited Berlin, Stockholm, St Petersburg and Moscow, returning via Poland and Vienna. He also toured the battle field of Borodino and comments in detail on Russian reaction to the French occupation and on the military campaign. The plates are based on his travel sketches: twelve represent Russian views including St Petersburg, Novgorod, Smolensk, Kiev, Tchernigoff and Moscow ( with frontispiece showing the burnt out Palaces of Moscow after the great fire). There are also attractive aquatints of Stockholm, Berlin (Brandenburg Gate), and Cracow (University). The textual plan of Moscow on page 405 shows the areas of the city destroyed by the fire.Leather bound with gold tooling on spine. King\'s Inn Library, Dublin mark on first endpaper and last page. Signature on endpaper. Foxing throughout.
