The author, an Oxford student, visited Berlin, Stockholm, St Petersburg and Moscow, returning via Poland and Vienna. He also toured the battle field of Borodino and comments in detail on Russian reaction to the French occupation and on the military campaign. The plates are based on his travel sketches: twelve represent Russian views including St Petersburg, Novgorod, Smolensk, Kiev, Tchernigoff and Moscow ( with frontispiece showing the burnt out Palaces of Moscow after the great fire). There are also attractive aquatints of Stockholm, Berlin (Brandenburg Gate), and Cracow (University).
