Metrical Tales and Other Poems
Edited by Bertha Leith-Adams. First Series Complete. David Grant was a Scottish poet, in 1865 he became assistant master of Eccleshall College, a private school near Sheffield. Subsequently he purchased a day school in Sheffield, which proved a failure, and in 1880 he had to retire from his charge penniless. From that date till his death in 1886 he acted as a private tutor in Edinburgh. He published \'Metrical Tales\' at Sheffield in 1880, and \'Lays and Legends of the North\' at Edinburgh in 1884. \'A Book of Ten Songs,\' with music, with a preface by Professor Blackie, appeared after his death. His poems evince a sense of humour, and he had considerable narrative power in verse.Original pebble-grained cloth boards with blind borders enclosing a gilt illustration of an urn and flowers on the front board. Blind borders also adorn the back board and gilt lettering is found on the spine. Rubbing and bumping of pages commensurate with shelf wear and age. Significant discolouration of board edges all around. Creasing is found on spine and some tearing of cloth on spine is present. Page edges are discoloured but internal pages are clean and bright. Staining/foxing of endpapers and previous owners’ inscriptions on front paper with embossed address. Tight binding of pages. 8vo.
