A strong early variety with straight, cylindrical blunt-ended roots and a very little core. Their strong tops make harvesting the roots easier. Early sowings need protection with cloches. Seedlings appear within 14-21 days of planting and if continuous crops are desirable sow every 2-3 weeks. When harvesting, select alternate young carrots from the row, allowing the remainder to develop fully. Keep well watered to prevent roots splitting. Root vegetables boast a host of colours and flavours and include carrots, radish, horseradish, sweet potato, turnip and beetroot. Their low rate of metabolism allows for a relatively long postharvest life. Thanks to their high water content, they are key ingredients for a low fat diet.
